The Marcia Reed Virtual Gallery

Editor's Introduction

"In preparation for this exhibition I was able to sit down and have a long interview with Heather Somershein who is this issue's featured artist. Heather is not only an accomplished painter she is also the owner of her own art gallery, Art Attack, in Somerville, MA. Heather's love for art and painting began in her childhood and became serious as early as sixteen. She grew up outside of Philadelphia, PA. Her earliest inspiration came from local Philly painter Bo Barlett and soon the Italian Renaissance would become influential in her art--so much so that she would eventually study painting in Italy. Now, Heather confesses that her work has grown very personal with only her palette choices remaining of her Italian references. And her work is personal. Her paintings and drawings are filled with delicate and often hidden images of sensuality, isolation, contemplation and play. Heather was strikingly honest in her expressing the emotional landscapes behind her work, and one felt a clear authenticity in both her work and her person. Issues such as growing old, alter egos, miscommunication, and self-examination are all themes prevalent in her work. Other visual themes are floating orbs, silhouettes of women with flowing hair, lace-like hand drawings of women, flowers or flower-like designs, and the use of several mediums in one piece. Almost always are hidden "worlds" inside of her paintings and these often lend her work an aura of music and mystery. The clearest impression one gets of her work and of the artist herself is vibrant energy. Though her themes may at times be complex and dark the energy is never low, which is an impressive feat when dealing with heavier emotional, political, or social themes. Heather was amazing to talk with, and I found myself both energized and inspired after our conversation. Her gallery is an absolute labor of love, and if you find yourself in the Boston Metro area I heartily suggest you stop by and not only check out the art (Heather's included), but meet the artist and curator Heather Somershein. Art Attack is located at: 108 Beacon Street, Somerville, MA 02143. The gallery phone number is: 617-441-3833. You can also find more information regarding Heather and Art Attack at: www.artattack108.com. I thank Heather for offering so much time and effort in helping us put this show together as well as sharing her work with us. I hope you enjoy the show."
